Day 37: Annapolis!

Beltsville to Annapolis, 31 miles, 1000 feet of climbing. Today’s ride presented us with the usual weather elements: warm and humid - we’ve ridden in hotter; sporadic strong headwinds - they helped cool us off; hills that had challenging gradients - they were short compared to what we’ve tackled elsewhere on this ride.  Nothing was going to prevent us from enjoying the last leg of our adventure - and we enjoyed it thoroughly! Any thoughts that perhaps we should have finished up last night instead of holding off the final 30 or so miles until this morning evaporated as we made the final turn to the waterfront in Annapolis and saw Susan, Ann, Bill’s son Peter, Mike’s son and daughter-in-law Matt and Deanna, and Mike’s brother Tom there to greet us and cheer us into the final stretch.  It really was a great day for us. We’re staying in Annapolis for the night.  We showered and had a lunch with the group and have dinner planned for later this evening at a nice restaurant in town. Mike is

Day 26: Titletown, USA

Wausau to Green Bay, 99 miles, mostly flat (with a few hills to keep things interesting)

We started out with some trepidation on today’s ride after yesterday’s afternoon slog, but it turned out to be a really fun ride day. The road was relatively flat and the winds were cooperative, even though they did not make it to tailwind designation. We moved along very nicely. Even a pinch flat, expertly repaired if we say so ourselves, did not get in the way of a fun day.

The scenery continued under the dairy farm motif, punctuated by the occasional store or stand selling cheese. There was plenty of corn and cows to be seen, as well as barns, silos and grain elevators.  The biggest difference between today’s landscape (compared to yesterday’s) is that things flattened out quite a bit as we got closer to Green Bay - which, as you can surmise from today’s blog title, the locals refer to as “Titletown” because the Packers have won a few NFL titles. As New England, New York and Philadelphia sports fans, we are not sure their assertions are completely accurate, but we felt compelled to give the locals their due - at least until we leave the State mid day tomorrow.

The other big news today concerns the extreme poor judgement by Bill when scheduling this bike trip, which caused him to spend the day with Mike instead of with his lovely wife Susan on their 31st wedding anniversary (today). (Mike seemed pleased to be with Bill, though.) It also made us realize that the real testament to endurance and perseverance should go to Susan for sticking with Bill all those years.

We should be leaving Wisconsin by mid-day tomorrow. We’ll fill you in on how we’ll be doing that then - although Lynn from Byfield seems to have seen the writing on the wall a few days ago.
